For international phone calls go to a phone house like on the West-Kruiskade, the Nieuwe Binnenweg and the Schiedamseweg. The prices vary a lot so shop around for the best deal. To call, first dial the international access code (00) followed by the country code, area code and then the number. Most phone houses also offer internet access for € 1.- an hour (check if they have a Skype option). No pennies left to call home, then make a collect call (0800-0101). Whoever accepts your call, pays for it!

Post/ Post offices

The easiest way to get stamps is to buy them from the place you buy your postcards. A stamp for a letter or postcard within the Netherlands is € 0.44, within Europe it is € 0.77 and the rest of the world is € 0.95. Otherwise just go to a Post Office like on the Weena 296-298 (open Mon-Thu 9am-6.30pm, Fri 9am-9pm, Sat 10am-5pm). Drop your mail in any red/orange letterbox. There are two slits: on the right for Rotterdam and local zip codes and on the left for the rest: 'overige postcodes'.

The Central Library in Rotterdam is a great place to relax on a rainy day. You can read foreign newspapers or books, use the internet and play chess on a life-sized chess board. They also have Lonely Planets for every country in the world!
